When we were thinking of the names to get for baby, our first criteria was that no matter in which language, which dialect, the name was read in, there will be no way people can make fun of. Be it her chinese name or a 'christian' name. So, when we came back from you long zi, we rejected many names as we think people will make fun of. Can't remember what the names were. And then, we arrive at Yi(2) Zhen(1). So far, this name sounds fine.
About her 'Christian' name, we did not want to get any for her at first coz we thought as Chinese, we should be proud of our chinese names. But, as a teacher myself, I know that no matter how nice a Chinese name I get for her, it may not be pronounced the way it is supposed to be pronounced and it defeats the whole purpose. Thus we decide that we will call her Chinese name as often as we can, pronouncing it the right way of course. And we will get her a 'Christian' name, so people can pronounce it correctly and remember her more easily. Criteria for 'christian' name, cannot be too 'modern', hmm, i have seen children having all kinds of non traditional , funny names nowadays, and they are so difficult to pronounce. Next, I don't want my gal's name to be the same as that of my students.
And, da da, Bernice Lee Yi Zhen.
She has got many pet names.
1)Bernie -- wai gong( aka gong gong) don't know how to pronounce
2)Bernie-nie -- improvised by yiyi
3)Nini -- improvised by wai po (aka popo)
4) Dear dear or dear, Bernice, yi zhen -- called by mummy
5) my dear, Bernice, yi zhen --called by daddy
Well, think all babies have many pet names as called by different people. As long as they sound nice, hee hee , i don't mind, they sound more qin qie anyway.
